Things to know about MSDS;

In order to prepare MSDS, it is necessary to have not only a certificate but also chemical experience, knowledge and other relevant legal regulations.

MSDS is an abbreviation of the English words Material Safety Data Sheet and is also called SDS (Safety Data Sheet). The term GBF is used as the abbreviation of the document whose Turkish equivalent is Material Safety Data Sheet or Safety Data Sheet.

MSDS, which is an important starting point for the development of a health and safety program, is a document that contains information on potential hazards (health, fire, reactivity and environment) and how to use chemical products safely. The main purpose here is to determine the negative effects that harmful substances and mixtures offered to the market may have on human health and the environment and to control and monitor them. The Safety Data Sheet contains detailed information on the following headings;

  • Identification of Material/Mixture and Company/Supplier
  • Identification of Hazards
  • Composition/Information on Ingredients
  • First Aid Measures
  • Fire Fighting Measures
  • Accidental Release Measures
  • Handling and Storage
  • Exposure Controls/Personal Protection
  • Physical and Chemical Properties
  • Stability and Reactivity
  • Toxicological Information
  • Ecological Information
  • Disposal Information
  • Transportation Information
  • Regulatory Information
  • Other Information

Chemical manufacturers and importers are required to obtain or develop a Material Safety Data Sheet for each hazardous chemical they manufacture or import. Distributors are responsible for providing their customers with a copy of these MSDS sheets. Employers must have an MSDS data sheet for each hazardous substance they use. Employers must be able to rely on the information they receive from their suppliers.

In our country, the preparation of material safety data sheets, their content and preparation authorizations are determined by the “Regulation on Safety Data Sheets for Hazardous Substances and Mixtures” and a special MSDS document must be possessed for each chemical product and material that needs to be controlled in accordance with the relevant Regulation. Both the product name and the supplier in the MSDS must match the material in use. The validity period of the MSDS is a maximum of 2 years for each product. It must be updated every 2 years.
